Macular degeneration has been linked to hearing loss in a recent study in Turkey. All subjects were fifty or older and had eye and hearing examinations. Analysis between fifty macular degeneration subjects was compared to forty-three normal subjects. The macular degeneration group reported 50% mild, 20% moderate, and 6% severe hearing loss. The normal group reported 35% mild, 5% moderate, and none with severe vision loss. Further analysis showed greater hearing loss in subjects with dry macular degeneration vs wet macular degeneration. Researchers concluded age-related hearing loss is more common in those with macular degeneration.
